Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) for Rectal Cancer

Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) for Rectal Cancer

Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) is the standard operation for rectal cancer and has transformed patient outcomes worldwide.

What it involves

The surgeon removes the rectum along with the surrounding fatty tissue (the mesorectum), which often contains hidden cancer cells and lymph nodes.

Why it matters

By removing this tissue completely and within the natural anatomical plane, the risk of the cancer coming back in the pelvis is greatly reduced.

Benefits

TME offers the best chance of cure while minimizing local recurrence. In many cases, it can be combined with pre-operative radiotherapy or chemotherapy for even better results.

What to expect

The surgery can often be performed with minimally invasive techniques. Where possible, the anal sphincter is preserved, allowing patients to avoid a permanent stoma.

Patient FAQ – TME

  • Who is a candidate? Patients with rectal cancer who require surgical removal of the tumour.
  • What are the risks? Risks include leakage from the bowel join, urinary or sexual dysfunction (due to pelvic nerves), and in some cases the need for a temporary or permanent stoma.
  • How long is recovery? Hospital stay is usually 4–5 days, with full recovery in 4–6 weeks.
